pests
Infections and pests.
For information about infectious diseases, please visit the website of the GGD Limburg-Noord . Here you will find information about the oak processionary caterpillar and the tick that you can encounter as a walker.
Oak processionary caterpillar.
The municipality of Bergen is intensively fighting the arrival of the oak processionary caterpillar. Unfortunately, this does not mean that the walking routes are always free of the oak processionary caterpillar. After contact with the almost invisible hairs of these caterpillars, you can suffer from itching, skin rash or irritation to the eyes or airways. Especially in dry and windy weather you have to be careful and protect your skin from the stinging hairs.
Avoid any contact with the caterpillars and their remains. Provide good coverage of the neck, arms and legs. After contact with the caterpillars or stinging hairs, wash your skin well and rinse your eyes with water. Also wash your clothes. The symptoms generally disappear within two weeks. A gentle cream containing camphor or menthol can provide relief. In case of serious complaints you can report to the first aid station.
Lyme disease.
You may be bitten by a tick while walking. Ticks are small spider-like insects and feed on the blood of the human or animal they are on. Ticks mainly hide in bushes, forests and long grass and wait there for a host. The bite does not hurt and therefore you do not notice anything at first. It is wise to wear skin-covering clothing. Check your body every day after the hike. A bite from a tick can cause Lyme disease with long-term symptoms of chronic fatigue, suddenly very painful joints, neurological and heart problems as a result.
Bitten by a tick? Remove the tick immediately with tick removal tweezers. If a tick is removed within 20 hours, the chance of infection is small, but not excluded. You can read more information about the ticks and the first symptoms of disease on the website of the Lyme Association .
Transport
The organization ensures that parking is arranged in every village. We kindly ask you to travel together as much as possible and if possible to come on foot, by bicycle or by public transport (line 83). Are you coming by car? Try to carpool as much as possible.
Food and drink
You can buy something to eat and/or drink at a number of rest areas. You are allowed to bring your own food and drink at all rest areas.
We advise all hikers to bring a bottle of water (or tea) for the journey. If you walk for more than an hour, it is important to bring something to eat (eg a sandwich with sweet fillings or grape sugar). The water bottles can be filled for free at the rest areas.
7. Always wash your feet with cold water and without soap.
We advise every participant to listen carefully to the weather forecast and to adjust your clothing accordingly.
