In Sperrins & Killeter Walking Festival walkers of all ages and abilities have the chance to get outside and explore the beauty, history and heritage of the Sperrins and Killeter regions.

Walks are available at a variety of levels including easy strolls (perfect for families and budding nature photographers), moderate treks and challenging hill walks across some of the country's most dazzling landscapes.

Challenging: ‘Saints and Sinners The Origins of Badoney’ Carnanelly- Ougthmore- Goles (12km)

This route will be over open hill-side, with a small proportion on tracks, and participants should be comfortable with sustained hiking on moorland and upland countryside. Explore the importance of Badoney in the foundation of the early Christian church in Ireland

Moderate: Bog Dreams Ireland’s Glacial Past’ Craignamaddy Loop (8-10km)

This walk follows the old track over Craignamaddy above the town of Plumbridge and loops back into the village on minor roads. It is suitable for fit people accustomed to ascents and descents and will include input from a local expert on bog-land habitats and their significance for carbon capture.

Easy: Foraging your path to Health’- Balix Boardwalk and Loop (6km)

This route includes the Balix Board-Walk and is part-trail and part-minor road around the circumference of Balix Hill between the Butterlope and Altishane. Suitable for all ages, it will include input by a local expert on forageable plants at the time of year.

This walk is through wild countryside on the border between Tyrone and Donegal. Participants should be comfortable with hiking through a range of terrain mostly off-trail. The walk will explore the intricacies of heritage in a border or ‘termonn’ area and visit historic sites.

This walk is a looped walk for all ages, focussing on photographing landscapes. Led by a professional photographer, Leitrim Hill above Killeter Village provides both natural vistas and Neolithic archaeology to capture some great ritual landscape shots

Sperrins & Killeter Walking Festival

Far and Wild has been contracted as the delivery agent for Sperrins and Killeter Walking Festivals 2022. As a community interest company, Far and Wild aims to help communities make the best sustainable use out of their recreational resources.

Having helped deliver Sperrins Walking Festival since 2012, the company has harnessed the best of local guides and walk leaders living in the Sperrins to deliver the Festival. This year local guides will compliment mountain leaders to lead walks in both Festivals and bring a home-grown flavour to the festivities. Happy hiking!

GENERAL ADVICE

All walkers should carry day sacks containing waterproofs, spare clothing, adequate food and drink. For those participating on Moderate, Challenging and Extreme walks, walking boots MUST be worn with appropriate waterproof clothing. We strongly advise that you do not wear jeans. Pre – booking is essential for all walks.

The Festival organisers take your safety seriously and have a duty of care towards participants. However, festival goers are ultimately responsible for their own safety and those taking part in the Sperrins & Killeter Walking Festival agree to do so at their own risk. The organisers reserve the right to alter or cancel any route. The organisers are not liable for accidents caused by failure to follow directions as communicated by the organisers, thefts and/or damage to property.

Every effort will be made to make this a safe, enjoyable and memorable event. An inadequately equipped person could affect the safety and enjoyment of the whole group, so we reserve the right to refuse participation to inadequately equipped individuals.
