Welcome to the Summer Walking Festival programme of walks. The Walking Festival is an exciting event that includes walks for everyone from beginners to the more advanced walker. Please be prepared for the weather and dress appropriately – you will need waterproof clothing, comfy walking boots or shoes, sun cream, sun hat bottles of water and food (for the walks where this is indicated).

The route follows mainly good tracks past Home Farm and the site of an old Leper Hospital, then ascends a steep old mine incline through the woods past Blue Lake. We continue to ascend to Highcliff Nab in time for lunch. We return to the Visitor Centre via the site of the ‘old’ Hutton Hall and the ‘new’ Hutton Hall.

Bring your Woodland walks even more to life by getting to know the main characters… the trees(!) through some simple leaf ID and easy tips and tricks as well as learning about their value to wildlife, traditional uses, and some folklore. This will be an informal, chatty walk around Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park with the site Ranger aided with some handouts and spotter sheets you can take away and use again.

This walk is an exploration of the coast at Skinningrove and an introduction to how its amazing geology (natural and man-made) has given rise to gems of plants and wildlife. We will walk out over the rocks at low tide to view the impressive cliffs and you are never too old to rummage in rockpools or hunt for fossils. (Please wear sturdy footwear and be aware that there will be slippery and uneven ground) Please bring a snack/flask as we will have time for a short break.

We start by passing the Loftus Water Mill, through Rosecroft Wood following the beck to Rosecroft Lane and passing an ancient pannier way on the way to Liverton Village, where we follow the Bridleway to Handale Abbey Walled Garden for a lunch stop. We then continue through Handale farm across fields to Loy Lane which takes us back to Loftus.

Join us as we go back in time with the Normanby History Group from the formation of the Country Park to the hay day of the Normanby and Ormesby Brickworks, to the Ironstone Works and even further back to the years of William Ward Jackson as Lord of the Manor 1790-1842 (who also built Normanby Hall) as Sylvia Fairbrass presents the fascinating insights from his personal diaries and accounts. We will start in the Visitor Centre for a brief introduction with lots of old pictures and maps, and we’ll then set out for a walk around the key historic features and see how the landscapes have changed.

The Potter is for people who ordinarily find accessing Gisborough Priory and Woodland a challenge. Carers are welcome. In the closed security of the Priory people are welcome to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the grounds and woodland. An optional guided tour is available for those who would like one and will be geared to the needs of the people taking part. Plans of wheelchair routes and large print information will be available. Some paths can be muddy and slippery in wet weather and the ground uneven.

This stunning walk takes in all the most beautiful parts of Saltburn, starting in Cat Nab car park, through the Italian Gardens and Rifts Wood, along Marske Mill Lane to Hob Hill, through the Cattle Arch, along Hazel Grove and the bottom promenade, then through Saltburn Gill Nature Reserve towards Brotton, finally swinging round on to Huntcliffe finishing off at the Ship Inn.

We start at Guisborough Forest Walkway outside the Visitor Centre and follow the old railway line to Hutton Village, heading along woodland tracks towards Blue Lake. We continue up the bank and follow tracks through Guisborough Forest before making our way back to Bousdale Wood and returning to Guisborough Forest Walkway. Stout footwear is recommended. Bring a snack/flask as there will be time for a short break.

This fabulous walk sets off along the Cleveland Way (England Coast Path) from Saltburn climbing to enjoy the views from Huntcliff and admire the lovely Charm Bracelet sculpture. Once we pick up the views towards Skinningrove we head inland to Brotton and then return to Saltburn crossing the peak of the wonderful Warsett Hill, with a stunning panorama all around.

How to book
There is a charge of £2.00 per walk per person, which must be paid on booking or by 31st August 2022. You can pay in person by cash, card or cheque made payable to Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council at Flatts Lane Woodland Country Park Visitor Centre or Guisborough Forest & Walkway Visitor Centre. Please note you need to book on each separate walk individually.
