Welcome to our walking festival website, we hope you find the information you need. We offer 60 free walks in the beautiful surroundings of this unique UNESCO World Heritage site, traditionally starting on the first Saturday of the May Day Bank Holiday. Come and see the Iron Bridge in all its splendour and whether you join us for one walk or 9 walks, walking across it will always be a special moment.

The Ironbridge Gorge Walking Festival Experience

  • A warm welcome.

  • 60 free walks from 3 to 20 (ish) miles over a nine-day period.

  • Morning, afternoon and evening walks.

  • Dog friendly walks.

  • Friendly and experienced walk leaders who are passionate about walking and who love the area.

  • Medals for completing 25, 50 or 100 miles, over 3 or more walks, during the 9 days. Walks are planned so that you can achieve any of the distance medals over the two weekends of the Festival, including Bank Holiday Monday.

  • An opportunity to experience the beautiful landscape of the Gorge, learn about its industrial heritage and even climb The Wrekin, one of our famous Shropshire landmarks which offers a bird’s eye view of the Gorge.

  • A certificate for every walker and a medals ceremony on the last day of the Festival at the All Nations Inn from 4.30pm. We will email you your Certificate after the event.

If you can’t collect your medal on the last day, they will be available for collection from the All Nations after the event. For our walkers, who aren’t local to Shropshire, we can post them out, if you contact us as we’ll need your full address.

Grading of Our Walks

▲  Walks for everyone, including people with conventional wheelchairs and pushchairs, using easy access paths.  Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.
Up to 4 miles/6.5 km at a slow pace on level ground.

▲▲  Walks for anyone who does not have a mobility difficulty, a specific health problem or is seriously unfit.  Suitable for pushchairs if they can be lifted over occasional obstructions.  Comfortable shoes or trainers can be worn.
Up to 8 miles/13 km at a leisurely pace on good paths and tracks. Low hills and/or undulating ground.

▲▲▲ Walks for reasonably fit people with at least a little country walking experience.  May include unsurfaced rural paths and steps.  Walking boots/shoes and warm, waterproof clothing are recommended.
Up to 10 miles/16 km at a leisurely pace with some ascent or over roughish ground.

▲▲▲▲ Walks for people with country walking experience and a good level of fitness.  May include some steep paths and open country.  May be at a brisk pace.  Walking boots/shoes and warm, waterproof clothing are essential. Up to 12 miles/19 km moderately demanding with hills generally on tracks or paths at a moderate pace.

▲▲▲▲▲ Walks for experienced country walkers with an above average fitness level.  May include hills and rough country.  May be at a brisk pace.  Walking boots/shoes and warm, waterproof clothing are essential.
Over 14 miles/23 km moderately demanding with hills generally on tracks or paths at a moderate pace.

Your Safety

Please take personal responsibility for ensuring that you are physically fit enough to take part in the walks that you have selected and that you have appropriate clothing and equipment.

For all walks, walking boots/shoes are essential

Carry sufficient water for the length of the walk

Carry both sun protection and wet weather protection

Take high energy snacks or, for longer walks, more substantial meals

Your safety is important to us and to ensure that you have the most enjoyable experience on our walks, please take note of the following guidance.

In the interest of the safety of all our walkers, walk leaders will exercise their right to refuse to take walkers who are ill-equipped.

Timing

Please arrive at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before the start of each walk. Walks will commence at the given time, and unfortunately, we are unable to wait for any late arrivals.

Dogs

Due to the amount of livestock in the Gorge and surrounding areas dogs are NOT permitted on walks unless specifically marked with the symbol shown. DF  The walk leader may restrict the number at the start of the walk, if they consider it to be appropriate for the safety of other walkers.

COVID-19

Any COVID-19 precautions will be taken in accordance with the current Government guidelines, therefore the committee may have to alter numbers and routes at short notice.
