We have been very encouraged by the number of walkers who have taken part in our three previous walking festivals. With this level of support, we have the confidence to organise our fourth festival in September. We look forward to seeing old friends again and hope to welcome many newcomers too. Once again, we expect it will be the largest
canal focussed festival in the country, with more walks (and walkers) than any other. We believe that our 46 mile long canal has parts that are as attractive as any in the country. Do take the opportunity to join a walk in an area with which you are not familiar and you will hopefully be pleasantly surprised.
This extensive programme covers many popular areas – though perhaps using one or two different paths to previous years. There are also new walks - even including a visit to a football stadium. We are also pleased that once again we can offer the opportunity to walk the whole length of the canal in three stages.
Of course, no Chesterfield Canal Festival would be complete with our popular Boats & Boots walks – combining a walk with a ride on one of our trip boats. We believe that this offering is unique to this canal, so give it a try. We are most grateful to the walk leaders and those who assist them, representing many different groups and organisations, for revising checking and leading the walks. And we must especially thank our sponsors - Harworth Group, Canal & River Trust, Derbyshire Grants Programme, Eckington Parish Council and West Stockwith Parish Council.
So, feast your eyes on all the possibilities. We hope to see you on the canal in September – and remember to book early to ensure your place as some walks are very popular.
We will explore the local history, especially the Victorian and Edwardian boom years of the village, comparing the village now and then, using old photographs. The Canal brought a great boost to the village and helped to create the boom years of the Victorian and Edwardian eras, a time when nonconformist and established religions played a major role in people’s lives. We will finish at All Saints Parish Church which dates from the 12th century. The east window of the Holy Cross chapel was designed by John Piper and made by his glassmaker, Patrick Reyntiens, famous for their work on Coventry Cathedral’s restored Baptistry window, one of the greatest stained glass windows in the world.

Preparing for your walk
Walkers are expected to make their own transport arrangements. The start points of most walks are close to rail stations and/or bus services.
Please try to arrive at least 15 minutes before the stated set off time to get registered and have a briefing. Walk leaders will not keep everyone else waiting if you are late.
Please wear suitable clothing, especially decent boots. Some paths, including towpaths, are likely to be muddy. It is always wise to wear several layers and to bring a waterproof jacket. A drink is also a good idea.
Refreshments
Most walks start or finish near pubs or cafés. On long walks, it is a good idea to bring a packed lunch, see the symbols at the bottom of the walk descriptions.
Accessibility
The majority of walks are not wheelchair or pushchair friendly because they cross fields, stiles etc. The exceptions are the Boats & Boots on John Varley ll – Walks 31 & 32.
