The three challenge walks os Castlerock Walkfest have amazing views, on a clear day you can even see Donegal, the Sperrins and Scotland.  The Grangemore Walk takes you for a circular walk over ancient sand dunes.  Families enjoy the fun of our Family Walk and our History Walks are a stroll with interesting facts about Castlerock and Earl Bishop Hervey of Downhill Demesne.

Ever thought of trying Nordic Walking, we have an instructor and poles ready for you to try.  Explore the Castlerock Moors with an archaeologist, or just come to get in your 10,000 steps, while enjoying the banter.  Don’t forget you need to book if you want to do any of the walks.

Altikeeragh Challenge Walk

Duration: 6-7 hours
Length: approx 12 Km/7.5 miles
Walk Type: Challenging with boggy terrain in places

Walk Description

This is one of our challenging walks for average hill walkers, i.e. it includes boggy as well as hard core tracks, some forest walking and along deep grassy fire breaks and crossing narrow streams.  However it is a rewarding walk through the highlands behind Castlerock offering good north coast views as well as walking by an important ASSI and wildlife area. Walk across a land where only peat cutters and foresters tread.

Bellarena Challenge Walk

Walk Details

This is one of our challenge walks for the average hill walker, i.e. it is long, at 18km, with some steep inclines.  Underfoot it has a mix of hill and forest tracks as well as road surfaces. On the hill there can be some rough stones and some styles to cross.

However it is well rewarded, offering superb views of Lough Foyle, the Magilligan penninsula, Inishowen and the north coast. The walk begins by climbing through forest to the nature reserve with wonderful Dexter cattle, Essex ponies and possibly some goats. Then to the top of Binevenagh with its outstanding views. The guide will lead you along the Gortmore cliffs passing the view point with the famous figure of Manannan Mac Lir, the Irish Sea God, and on to the Downhill forest. Through the Downhill Forest before entering the Downhill Estate at the Bishop’s Gate and head finally to the Peter Thompson hall and a well-deserved rest and cuppa.

Walk Details

This is one of our challenge walks for the average hill walker ie it has some steep inclines and rough terrain.  Underfoot it has a mix of hill and forest tracks as well as some hard core surfaces. On the hill there can be some rubble and some fences to cross. However it is well rewarded offering superb views of Lough Foyle, the Magilligan peninsula,  Inishowen and the north coast. The walk explores the foothills, forestland and open pastures as well as a steep ascent to the cliff tops and its superb views. If the weather is right you may see gliders ascending from the Ulster Gliding Club. Exmoor ponies, wild goats and Dexter cattle may be seen on the hillside.

Walk Description

This is one of our moderate walks, at about 2 to 2.5 hours walking with frequent stops to talk about the Earl Bishop Hervey. Underfoot is forest and part hard-core tracks, with some gentle hills. This is a pleasant walk through the Downhill Demesne, visiting Downhill House and the iconic Mussenden Temple with their beautiful views of the north coast from the Barmouth to Portrush and beyond. Learn the story of the Earl Bishop Hervey – builder, traveller, art collector, and the Bishop of Derry/Londonderry.

Walk Description

This is one of our moderate walks, although parts are very rough terrain, hence the strong walking shoes. Underfoot it has a mix of hill and forest tracks as well as some hard core surfaces. Parts are on a straight road where care is required. However, it is well rewarded offering superb views of the Bann estuary and the hills towards Limavady. Hear some of the facts and local tales of this fascinating location.

 Walk Details

A National Trust ranger led guided walk of Grangemore Dunes at the Bann Estuary.  This year the walk be a circular one over the dunes.  The little known Grangemore Dunes, are located upwards of 2 miles from the present coastline, not the only hint of an unusual site.  With the entire site being designated as a ‘SAM’ scheduled ancient monument, as well as a nature reserve.

Walk through the past with a noted historian who will introduce you to the fascinating background of the village.
The walk will be approximately one and a half hours long on footpaths around the village and asides into buildings of interest.

WALK DETAILS

Boots the Walkfest mascot  has been kidnapped and is being held to ransom and we need your help to rescue him.   Find clues to solve the mystery as you follow the trail around the village.  The walk is all on footpaths so fully accessible.  A prize for every family who solve the clues and rescue Boots.

Walk Details

Nordic walking is fitness walking with specially designed poles.  Nordic walkers use more of their entire body (with greater intensity) and receive fitness-building stimulation not present in normal walking.   Nordic walking has been estimated as producing up to a 46% increase in energy consumption, compared to walking without poles.  Our qualified instructor will teach you the technique (or refresh your technique of you are a Nordic walker already) then take you on a walk in the vicinity of the village.  All equipment is supplied and the session will last about 2 hours.

Walks Disclaimer

Walks organised by the Castlerock WalkFest as part of the Castlerock Community Association (CCA) have Public Liability Insurance via the CCA.

This is not a personal accident insurance, participants on walks are responsible for their own Health and Safety, and the safe keeping of their equipment, clothing and belongings.

Participants on walks should follow the advice/instructions of the Walk Leader in order to minimise any risk to themselves and other participants.

Stout shoes with a good grip or walking boots should be worn along with weather proof clothing.

Dogs are not allowed on walks.

Walks should not pose any problems or hazards but walkers must  be aware of their health issues and they take the walk at their own risk. Issues might include:

  • heart disease or chronic bronchitis, asthma or emphysema
  • chest pain in the past month or when physically active
  • dizziness or have had loss of consciousness
  • joint or bone problem that is made worse by a change in your physical activity level
  • any long standing illness/disability that affects day-to-day activity.
