We're going hiking again! And you can be there. This year we are on the road for several days in the Fichtelgebirge with its mountains and rock towers. We explore the untouched Egertal in the border area to the Czech Republic, find our way through rock labyrinths and get to know the mysterious legends, history and regional cuisine in the Fichtelgebirge.
The BR hiking days in 2022 will take us all the way to the north-east of Bavaria. In the week after Pentecost, from June 7th to 10th, 2022, you can experience the Fichtelgebirge with BR Franken. We hike over peaks such as the Waldstein or the Kösseine as well as through the Egertal on the border with the Czech Republic. We explore the rock labyrinth of the Luisenburg and get to know rare animal breeds in Bavaria's first archedorf. Finally, the big BR hiking day takes us to the Ochsenkopf.
At the start of the BR hiking week, we got to know the first Archedorf in Bavaria, where rare livestock breeds are native, and we explored the rock labyrinth of the Luisenburg - on the way to the fantastic view from the Kösseine summit.
LIVE from the rock labyrinth
We then explored the rock labyrinth with a geopark ranger. On site, Stefan Straßer then went LIVE on the air in "Mittags in Franken" on BAYERN 1 - with our first impressions of today's hike. After that it keeps going uphill. We enjoy the views from Burgstein and Haberstein on the way to the Kösseine summit. On the Kösseine we deserved a break and refreshments. Past the Püttnerfelsen we hike from the Kösseine summit back to the Archedorf, where the Frankenschau was currently broadcasting LIVE from the beautiful museum garden at the end of the day.
On the second tour of the BR hiking week we got to know a different side of the Fichtelgebirge. We explored the border area with the Czech Republic and learned a lot about the history of porcelain production.
Our hike started at the Porzellanikon in Hohenberg an der Eger. From there we hiked past fish ponds and the water house on Steinberg and Heiligenberg and looked over Schirnding to Eger in the Czech Republic. With views over the Egertal steeped in history, we came back to Hohenberg and hiked up the Burgberg, where we stopped for a bite to eat.
Silent witnesses of a divided Europe
In the afternoon we started in the direction of the national border, which can now only be recognized by the fact that the hiking signs are yellow and no longer white. A plaque reminds us of the time when the border could only be crossed between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. On the way to Liba we crossed the patrol road patrolled by Czechoslovak border police in the period of divided Europe. Along the Eger we came back to Hohenberg, strengthened ourselves at the Carolinenquelle with a sip of spring water for the rest of the way back to Porzellanikon. From there, the Frankenschau currently broadcast LIVE on BR television.
From the lake via Sagen and Saale to Schnaps: This is how the third tour of the BR hiking week can be described in four keywords. We hike from Weißenstadt via the Waldstein and the source of the Saale back to a small distillery.
We start our hike in Weißenstadt and climb up to the Waldstein, where Adrian Roßner, the consultant for customs and home care of the Fichtelgebirge Association, takes us into the fabulous stories about the mighty rock. We stop at the summit house and Stefan Straßer reports LIVE in the program "Mittags in Franken" on BAYERN 1. Of course we also enjoy the fantastic view to the east from the pulpit on the Wanldstein.
Look east and west
A short time later we look west from the Arnstein rock before we hike down to the source of the Saale, which used to be a mine. What was probably mined there? We then return to Weißenstadt on beautiful natural paths. Expected at the edge of the forest and before that a little surprise that we enjoy together with the view of the city and the lake. We then hike across the market square to the Sack distillery, where schnapps is distilled from herbs and fruits from the region. There the Frankenschau currently broadcasts LIVE on BR television.
The big BR hiking day takes us in two stages over the leisure mountain in the Fichtelgebirge, the Ochsenkopf. The hiking guides of the Fichtelgebirge Association have chosen two tours.
For the big BR hiking day, we meet at 8.30 a.m. at the Ochsenkopf Nord car park in Bischofsgrün (daily fee: two euros). From there we start the round trip together at 9.00 a.m. First we hike on a narrow path along the Main via the Karches inn to the summit of the Ochsenkopf. There is also the option of following a better paved winter hiking trail. Mittags in Franken broadcasts an hour LIVE on BAYERN 1 from the summit. In the afternoon we follow the certified winter hiking trail via the Grassemann open-air museum to the brand new BLSV sports camp in Bischofsgrün, where we end the BR hiking day comfortably with music from BR Heimat. The Frankenschau is currently broadcasting LIVE on BR television. A free shuttle bus then takes hikers back to the car park.
Shorten with the cable car
All paths are perfectly signposted, so that no hiker can get lost. However, hikers should bring sure-footedness and a reasonable level of fitness with them. Sturdy shoes go without saying. If you are fit enough, you can go on both tours very relaxed. Those who can only be there in the morning or only in the afternoon can simply take the cable car to the summit or back. All information can also be found in a road book, which you can obtain free of charge at the start and during the lunch break at the summit at the information stands of the Fichtelgebirge Association, the Fichtelgebirge Tourist Office and the Bavarian Radio.
Behind the scenes of the Ochsenkopf station
The Ochsenkopf can be recognized from afar by the high antenna of the Bayerischer Rundfunk's Ochsenkopf transmitter. The colleagues who ensure a good reception 365 days a year are also looking forward to the hikers' visit on June 10th. An FFP2 mask is required for the guided tours through the Ochsenkopf transmitter.
For better planning, we would appreciate a non-binding registration. The name and the number of people helps the summit house at the Ochsenkopf and the sports camp in preparing the BR hiking day.
Several routes in the Fichtelgebirge have been designated as "Wanderbares Deutschland Quality Trail". With this title, the German Hiking Association distinguishes particularly beautiful and adventurous hiking trails. Several criteria must be met at the same time: Among other things, the path must be easy to walk on, natural paths that hardly lead over busy roads. Good markings, a varied landscape and a high experience value - for example through natural attractions or impressive views - are just as important as sights and inns along the routes.
